South First Friday Art Walk, Friday, March 5, from 8 – 10
Opening Reception: YOGA INSPIRED ART by Angeles Moreno
Simplicity, harmony, color, and strong outlines define Angeles’ art, influenced by her life’s work as a graphic designer. Yoga came to her at its own time. It was in discovering consistent yoga practice that revealed a more profound significance and a fresh inspiration for her artwork.
Seeking a deeper understanding of the disciplines at the core yogic principles, Angeles completed the Ashtanga Teacher Training at Mount Madonna, founded 35 years ago by the silent Guru, Baba Hari Dass.
To capture and (re)express the many universal, positive messages from this ancient philosophy, the canvases
began to fill with the Spirit of Yoga, compassion – balance – harmony.
Angeles Moreno is a yoga teacher at Downtown Yoga Shala. To see more of Angeles’ work, please join us after Candlelight Yoga (6:15-8pm) as we open our doors to the art patrons and the downtown community for an Artist Reception from 8-10pm on First Friday, March 5th.
See you at the Shala!

Pranayama Workshop with Elena Milyukova, Sunday, March 14, 2010, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
“Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale, and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God.” – Krishnamacharya. In these series of classes Elena will focus on the Pranayama practice, art and science of the rhythmical control of the Breath. She will also give you a short overview of the central concepts of yoga philosophy, history of yoga, key yoga practices, and yoga anatomy. Main emphasis of our yoga practice is on developing sensitivity and awareness of how the mind-body-breath interacting system works. Pranayma is one of the instruments that are used to achieve it. In the very early scriptures, such as Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (100 BCE – 400 CE) and Hatha Yoga Pradipika (1400 CE) pranayma (control over the energies of the body) is mentioned as an important step that prepares a yoga practitioner for the main practice, Samadhi (meditation). Elena will introduce and teach you various pranayama techniques, establishing strong foundation, for further you can safely and properly develop your own practice. You will get direct experience of how breath can affect your state of being, quieting your mind and transforming your energy into inner joy. Each class will start from chanting and short meditation and finish with discussion and reflection on the experiences.

Yoga and TRE (Trauma Release Exercises) with Maria Alfaro, Sunday, April 18, 2010, 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM
An hour of gentle and all levels yoga will precede the revolutionary Trauma Releasing Exercises facilitated by Maria Alfaro. TRE was developed by David Berceli, a bioenergetic therapist, who has used it successfully all over the world for almost two decades, working with soldiers, fire fighters, police officers and survivors of war, earthquakes and other traumatic circumstances to help alleviate the many symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
What is TRE (Trauma Releasing Exercises)? TRE is a gentle, simple and profound technique that facilitates the lengthening and relaxation of the Psoas muscle. This relaxation provides a very effective release of physical and emotional tension and stress. The Psoas muscle is a very thick, deep and stubborn muscle that acts as a guardian of our lower belly. In its role of protector of our organs it contracts and tightens, becoming shorter, in response to life small and big traumatic experiences. A tight Psoas can cause many problems, including sciatica and lower back pain, just to mention a few. The TRE exercises work the legs, tiring them and creating a trembling response which begins in the legs and often spreads throughout the body. This gentle shaking is actually the nervous system way of discharging long held tension or unconscious muscle contraction to order to restore the body to wholeness. Some benefits that you may expect from TRE *Release of deep chronic tension and increase of overall energy and stamina * Shake loose unconscious involuntary muscular contraction * Discharge of buried emotional and physical trauma * Promotes deep relaxation and improves circulation * Improved mood and decrease of aches and pains * Increase of the body sensitivity to pleasure * Improved sense of being grounded * The healing of sciatica *. Increased flexibility.
Cost: $35 if paid by April 17th, $45 day of event.
